APK fraud is rising. An APK (Android Package Kit) is a file format used to install apps on Android devices. Fraudsters send fake SMS, emails or messages posing as trusted organisations, creating a sense of urgency and tricking Android users into downloading APK files from unknown links. These files can be malicious and allow fraudsters to take control of your phone and banking apps.
Know the warning signs and how this fraud operates
Fraudsters may:
- Send SMS, email or WhatsApp messages pretending to be trusted organisations
- Ask you to download an app for KYC updates, rewards, alerts or payments
- Share a link that installs a malicious APK file (not from an official app store)
Once installed, the app can:
- Access your SMS, calls, contacts or device settings
- Capture OTPs and monitor your activity
- Steal personal and banking details
This may lead to unauthorised access to your accounts and financial loss
How to protect yourself
- Download apps only from official app stores such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store
- Never install APK files received via SMS, WhatsApp, email or social media links
- Verify any request directly through official Deutsche Bank channels before taking action
- Do not share passwords, PINs or OTPs with anyone
- Disconnect from the internet and reset your phone immediately
- Restart your device regularly to reduce malware risk
Deutsche Bank will never ask for your OTP, PIN, password, CVV or internet banking credentials through phone calls, video calls, emails, SMS or social media. Please be cautious of such messages as Deutsche Bank only communicates via official approved channels and does not use WhatsApp or any other social media platforms for official business purposes.
